ALF stands for Auntie Lindafaye. In 1991 after she just arrived in Hawaii a little local girl asked her a question. "Auntie give me drink water?" In an instant the first thought and "western" reaction was... I'm not your auntie. It didn't take ALF long to understand the error of this kind of thinking. In the Hawaiian culture all people are related and this marvelous culture has had a lasting and profound effect on many of ALF's old and outdated western beliefs.
Lindafaye has worked as a licensed registered nurse, both on the Mainland and here in Hawaii for most of her adult life. She has a grown son, Jason, who also moved to Hawaii in 2000.
ALF arrived in Hawaii in 1991, under contract as a traveling nurse. She fell in love with the Aloha Spirit of the islands, the graciousness of its people and the rich history of Hawaiian culture.
Her simple home is nestled in a Ohia rainforest at a 2000 foot elevation, about 40 minutes from Hilo. Hapu'u, guavas and wild orchids grow rampant and the warm tropical rains serve to inspire her artistic talent.
Actually ALF does not own this land. She manages the land for Kahu O Kahiko Inc., a Hawaii non-profit organization with a mission of perpetuating the Hawaiian culture; protecting and proprogating Hawaiian indigenous medicinal and endangered plants. The acre ALF lives on is called the "Paniolo Project" and has an additional mission that serves as a model of affordable and sustainable living plus the perservation of all the colors of Ohia trees.
The Paniolo Project will never be sold. And long after Lindafaye and Jason's life, others in Hawaii will take over and follow the mission that has been set forth. ALF and Jason are giving back to the Hawaiians who have lost so much.
ALF began painting miniatures for the first time in 1992, when she met Hillary Sadur who, first and foremost, taught her some basic oil painting techniques (namely, how not to make "mud"). Her first canvasses were the insides of oyster shells. Occasionally, she and Hillary would sit under the tall shady trees of Ala Moana Park in Honolulu and paint seascapes while watching the sailing ships and beachgoers enjoying themselves. This was a particularly difficult "canvas" to work on and Hillary encouraged her to paint larger scenes on traditional canvas for practice, but Lindafaye wasn't satisfied with the results. Now she's constantly looking for items which will serve as "canvasses" for her miniature paintings.
For the past sixteen years she has practiced painting techniques, read painting "how to" books and developed her own style. As you view the gallery you will notice she has placed a quarter in the photographed scene as to better understand how small these precious paintings are.
Her medium is oil paint on all scenic backgrounds and acrylic paint in the foreground. The process of rendering each miniature takes a lot of time, due to the various stages of rendering and the large number of canvases painted in each series.. Each layer of paint is dried by baking in a low temp oven overnight, prior to building the next layer toward the foreground. Each scene is baked an average of two times before the foreground is started. She approximates that it takes about 2-4 weeks to complete a series of paintings. Because she deals with such small quantities of paint, she works on several scenes at one sitting. Though the scenes are similar in composition, no two are EVER EXACTLY ALIKE.

ALF's Painting Process
From 1998 - 2008, she demonstrated/sold her work at the famous Hilo Hattie's in Hilo, Hawaii , as well as at craft shows and by word-of-mouth referrals.
Her inspiration is a deep and profound appreciation, respect and love for the Hawaiian culture and its people. Over the past 18 years she has become exposed to the traditions, customs and habits of Native Hawaiians and has come to believe what these peoples have known for hundreds of years AND what western civilization is just now beginning to understand. We are all one big family.
Besides being a self-taught artist ALF is an educator, a one time actor, writer an environmental and social justice activist.
